New 3D Campus for GE Additive
Building owner: GE Additive Concept Laser GmbH
Town/City: Lichtenfels
A building 421 metres long and 22 metres high: these are the dimensions needed to house Concept Laser, a company dedicated to the development and manufacture of 3D printing machines. The unique feature: Concept Laser (which is part of GE Additive) prints with metal. The company, which was founded in 2000, is thus pioneering in the field of powder-bed-based laser melting of metals. Alongside the massive production building, a state-of-the-art administration building of 20,000 square metres has also been created, which is home to a restaurant, auditorium, laboratories and showroom, in addition to open-plan offices. However, Concept Laser did not print the air conditioning units for the building itself, but bought them from Kampmann.
First and foremost, they fitted special width Katherm QK trench heaters. The arrow-shaped, largely glazed administration building is the ideal place of use for the Katherm unit with its whisper-quiet EC tangential fan. The unit can be customised to requirements: mitred corners, curved units, column cut-outs, chamfered ends – all shapes are possible.
The KaCool D AF ceiling cassette fits into the standard dimensions of a ceiling grid. However, at Concept Laser in Lichtenfels, the units are not concealed within a suspended ceiling but are installed visibly under the ceiling. The side diffuser of the KaCool D AF uses the Coandă effect and ensures a comfortable supply of heated or cooled air.
The doorways are screened by Kampmann door air curtains to prevent the ingress of cold air: thanks to its patented technology, the ProtecTor, which consists of an ambient air stream and a warm air stream, is both effective and economical. As standard, the door air curtains are installed horizontally above the doorway. However, Concept Laser also has the vertical version: two ProtecTor units mounted on top of each other at ultra-high doorways ensure that the comfortable climate stays inside.
But there also needs to be a supply of fresh air to create a pleasant room climate. This is provided in Lichtenfels by Kampmann RRA tubular diffusers and WKD vortex chamber swirl outlets. While the minimalist yet sophisticated exterior of the RRA can also be used as an interior architectural feature in public areas, the integrated wide nozzle of the WKD is designed for high ceilings in halls.
